Missed an exam, assessment deadline or placement because you were unwell? Australian universities, TAFEs and schools accept medical certificates from AHPRA-registered doctors as evidence for special consideration. Special consideration: why timing matters
Most universities require special consideration applications to be supported by evidence dated on or very close to the day of the affected exam or deadline — many explicitly require you to have seen the practitioner on the day, or within a day or two. That’s where telehealth matters: you can see a doctor today, from bed, instead of discovering next week that an undated illness can’t be evidenced. Certificates are issued from the date of the consultation — we cannot and do not backdate, and universities routinely reject backdated or retrospective evidence anyway.
What your certificate includes
- The doctor’s name and AHPRA registration details — what institutions check first
- The consultation date and the period you are certified unfit for study or assessment
- A statement that you were assessed — without disclosing your diagnosis
Some universities have their own “Professional Authority” or special consideration form that a practitioner must complete instead of (or as well as) a standard certificate. Have the form ready at your consultation and the doctor can review it with you — mention it when you book.

Frequently asked questions
Will my university accept a telehealth certificate?
Certificates from telehealth consultations with AHPRA-registered doctors carry the same practitioner details as clinic-issued ones and are accepted by Australian institutions. If your faculty requires its own form completed, bring it to the consultation.
I was sick during the exam yesterday — can I still get evidence?
A certificate can only be issued from the day the doctor actually assesses you — no legitimate provider can backdate. See a doctor as soon as possible; some institutions accept evidence dated within 1–2 days of the assessment, but check your university’s special consideration policy.
What does it cost?
