Carer’s Leave Certificate Online — Same Day
Yes, you can get a carer’s leave certificate online in Australia. If you need time off work to care for a sick child, partner or other member of your immediate family or household, book a short telehealth consultation with an AHPRA-registered doctor at MyGPOnline. If the doctor assesses that the person you’re caring for is unwell and needs your care, a carer’s leave certificate is emailed to you the same day — the consultation is a flat $19.
What is carer’s leave, and when do I need a certificate?
Under the Fair Work Act, employees can take paid personal/carer’s leave to care for or support a member of their immediate family or household who is sick, injured, or affected by an unexpected emergency. Immediate family includes your spouse or partner, children, parents, grandparents, grandchildren and siblings — plus the same relatives of your spouse or partner. Your employer can ask for evidence that would satisfy a reasonable person, and a certificate from a registered medical practitioner is the standard form of that evidence — for any length of absence if that’s the workplace policy.
How it works
- Book online — same-day telehealth appointments are usually available, 7 days a week.
- Consult with the GP — ideally with the person you’re caring for present (for a child, that just means having them with you). The doctor assesses their condition and your need to provide care.
- Receive the certificate — if the doctor is satisfied care is needed, the certificate is emailed the same day, ready to forward to your employer.
What the certificate says — and what stays private
A carer’s leave certificate states that you are required to provide care for a family or household member for the stated dates, with the doctor’s name and registration details. It does not disclose the person’s diagnosis or medical details — your employer is entitled to know you’re needed as a carer, not why. As with all our certificates, they are issued from the date of consultation — never backdated — and only when the doctor’s assessment supports it.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a carer’s certificate for my sick child?
Yes — caring for a sick child is the most common reason for carer’s leave. Book a telehealth consultation with your child present so the doctor can assess them, and the certificate covers your need to stay home and care for them.
Does carer’s leave come out of my sick leave?
For most employees, paid personal/carer’s leave is a single combined entitlement (10 days per year full-time) that covers both your own illness and caring responsibilities. Casual employees can take unpaid carer’s leave. Check your award or agreement for specifics.
How fast will I get it, and what does it cost?
A flat $19, privately billed (no Medicare rebate). The certificate is emailed the same day, usually within the hour during operating hours.
What if I’m the one who’s sick?
Then you want a sick leave certificate instead — same process, same price. For employer evidence rules, see medical certificates for work.
