Are Telehealth Medical Certificates Valid? What the Fair Work Act Says
Yes. Under the Fair Work Act, an employee taking sick or carer’s leave needs to provide evidence “that would satisfy a reasonable person” — and a medical certificate issued by a registered medical practitioner is the standard form of that evidence. Australian law does not distinguish between a certificate issued after a telehealth consultation and one issued face-to-face: both come from an AHPRA-registered doctor who has assessed you.
Your certificate includes the doctor’s name and provider details, the date of the consultation, and the period you are unfit for work or study. It does not disclose your diagnosis — your medical details remain confidential between you and the doctor.
Same-Day Certificates — and Why We Never Backdate
